The University of Indianapolis (UIndy) School of Nursing offers four nurse practitioner population foci: family (FNP), adult-gerontology primary care (AGPCNP), adult-gerontology acute care (AGACNP), and neonatal (NNP). Every specialty is available as an MSN. FNP, AGPCNP, and NNP also run as BSN-to-DNP tracks, and FNP, AGPCNP, and AGACNP are available as post-master’s certificates.
Three policies shape the decision more than any single specialty detail:
- Only five states can apply. UIndy admits NP students only from Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, and Ohio, so the program is regional even though most coursework is online.
- One rate for everyone who qualifies. Every NP track costs $828 per credit regardless of residency, but a $600 nursing fee and a $168 general services fee add about $768 per semester.
- Part-time by design. The FNP and AGPCNP master’s tracks run seven or eight semesters at under 8 credits per term, a pace built for nurses who keep working.

What stands out about UIndy’s NP programs
- Indiana’s only neonatal NP program. UIndy is the only Indiana school offering NNP preparation, with clinical training in Level IV NICUs at Riley Children’s and St. Vincent.
- Adult primary and acute care at one school. No other Indiana school offers both AGPCNP and AGACNP, and UIndy offers each as an MSN and a certificate.
- Residency-blind pricing within the region. The $828 rate is the same for an Ohio or Kentucky nurse as for an Indiana resident.
- Extra hands-on skills work. FNP and AGPCNP students take a standalone Diagnostics and Procedures in Primary Care course with a lab, and AGACNP students practice intubation, central lines, and chest tubes in campus simulation.
- Two start terms. FNP, AGPCNP, and AGACNP admit in fall and spring; NNP cohorts start each fall.
Which UIndy NP program fits your goal?
Family Nurse Practitioner
The 46-credit MSN runs part-time over seven or eight semesters, about 2.5 years, with 750 clinical hours. Coursework is asynchronous except for synchronous clinical courses, and the health assessment and diagnostics courses carry campus skills checkoffs. The 62-credit BSN-to-DNP adds DNP practicum work for 1,050 to 1,250 combined hours. Applicants to the MSN need a year of full-time RN experience before applying; BSN-to-DNP students need it before clinicals begin.
Adult-Gerontology Primary Care
AGPCNP mirrors the FNP structure: a 46-credit part-time MSN with 750 clinical hours, a 62-credit BSN-to-DNP, and a gap-analysis certificate. UIndy is the only Indiana school still offering an AGPCNP master’s or certificate, since Purdue now offers the specialty only as a doctorate.
Adult-Gerontology Acute Care
The 44-credit hybrid MSN runs eight semesters, about 2.6 years, with 750 clinical hours and regularly scheduled campus simulation in acute assessment, resuscitation, and invasive procedures. The experience bar is the highest at UIndy: one year of full-time RN experience to apply and two years by the program start, with ICU, ER, or step-down recommended. School staff help secure clinical sites in Indiana and neighboring states. AGACNP has no BSN-to-DNP at UIndy, but a post-master’s certificate is available.
Neonatal Nurse Practitioner
The online MSN-NNP is a 53-credit, three-year part-time program with 750 clinical hours, delivered in cohorts that start each fall. Coursework is online with synchronous virtual classes, plus an on-campus clinical intensive for assessment skills and procedures. Clinical training takes place in NICUs across Indiana, including Level IV units at Riley Children’s and St. Vincent. A 68-credit BSN-to-DNP NNP is also listed. UIndy does not publish NNP experience requirements on the program page, so request them from admissions.
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
All four specialties offer an MSN with 750 clinical hours, but the structures differ. FNP and AGPCNP run 46 credits part-time and are mostly online. AGACNP runs 44 credits in a hybrid format with recurring campus simulation. NNP runs 53 credits over three years with an on-campus intensive. Non-clinical courses are asynchronous across tracks, while clinical and specialty courses meet synchronously online.
UIndy publishes only sample courses rather than full plans of study. Full degree plans are available from the College of Health Sciences admissions team.
Doctor of Nursing Practice
BSN-to-DNP tracks are offered in FNP and AGPCNP (62 credits) and NNP (68 credits). UIndy describes an 11-semester part-time plan on its BSN-to-DNP page, while the FNP and AGPCNP track pages list 10 semesters. The FNP and AGPCNP doctorates carry 1,050 to 1,250 combined clinical and practicum hours, including 80 hours in pediatric primary care, 190 in advanced practice across the lifespan, and 240 in the transition-to-practice course.
Students can be admitted with less than a year of RN experience and complete the didactic core first, but they need one year of full-time RN work before clinicals begin. UIndy also offers post-master’s DNP tracks, but those do not add an NP specialty.
Post-graduate certificates
Post-master’s APRN certificates are available in FNP, AGPCNP, and AGACNP. There is no fixed curriculum: faculty review prior syllabi, course calendars, and documented clinical hours, then assign the remaining coursework. Credits, cost, and length are all set individually, so a certificate cannot be priced until the analysis is done.
Admission is stricter than for the MSN. Applicants need a 3.5 GPA in their master’s, a 3.0 BSN GPA, and, if not currently practicing as an APRN, graduate pharmacology completed within the past five years. UIndy states the gap analysis is required documentation when graduates apply for national certification.
Clinical placement
UIndy’s Clinical Placement team works with FNP and AGPCNP students to identify and secure local clinical sites, and AGACNP staff help secure sites in Indiana and its neighboring states. The wording is assistance, not a guarantee. NNP clinicals take place in Indiana NICUs, but UIndy does not publish who arranges them.
Students must hold an unencumbered RN license in the state where clinicals take place.
Format and campus requirements
Campus time differs by specialty. FNP and AGPCNP are mostly online, with skills checkoffs in Indianapolis during the health assessment and diagnostics courses and possible on-campus OSCEs during clinical courses. UIndy’s BSN-to-DNP cost page lists Indianapolis travel for those courses only through Fall 2025, so confirm whether checkoffs still apply to your cohort.
AGACNP is hybrid, with regularly scheduled in-person simulation sessions whose number is not published. NNP is online with synchronous virtual classes and an on-campus clinical intensive.
Admissions
- Residency: only residents of Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, and Ohio may apply to UIndy’s NP programs. A physical address is required.
- Degree and GPA: BSN from an NLN-AC or CCNE program with a 3.0 GPA; certificates add a 3.5 MSN GPA.
- License: Indiana RN license, or an unencumbered license in the state where clinicals occur.
- Experience: one year of full-time RN experience before applying for FNP and AGPCNP MSNs; before clinicals for BSN-to-DNP; one year to apply and two by start for AGACNP.
- Documents: résumé, career-goals essay, one recommendation from a BSN-prepared supervisor, and official transcripts. A faculty interview may be scheduled.
- Start terms: fall and spring for FNP, AGPCNP, and AGACNP; fall only for NNP.
Tuition
UIndy charges $828 per credit for every NP track in 2026–27, with no difference for residents and non-residents. Graduate nursing clinical students also pay a $600 nursing fee and a $168 general services fee each semester.
| Pathway | Credits | Tuition |
|---|---|---|
| MSN, FNP or AGPCNP | 46 | $38,088 |
| MSN, AGACNP | 44 | $36,432 |
| MSN, NNP | 53 | $43,884 |
| BSN to DNP, FNP or AGPCNP | 62 | $51,336 |
| BSN to DNP, NNP | 68 | $56,304 |
| Post-master’s certificate | Gap analysis | Set individually |
Totals are derived from the published rate and credits; UIndy publishes no program totals. The $768 in semester fees adds about $5,400 to $6,100 to a seven- or eight-semester MSN and $7,700 to $8,400 to a 10- or 11-semester doctorate. UIndy’s general graduate cost page lists different online and hybrid fee schedules, so confirm which applies with Student Billing. Start-up costs include a background check, drug screen, Shadow Health ($130), and an assessment kit (about $300), plus travel to Indianapolis.
Accreditation and certification
The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredits UIndy’s baccalaureate, master’s, Doctor of Nursing Practice, and post-graduate APRN certificate programs, a scope that explicitly includes the certificates. The University of Indianapolis is institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
FNP and AGPCNP graduates sit for national certification through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board or the American Nurses Credentialing Center. AGACNP graduates are eligible for the ANCC AGACNP-BC or the AACN ACNPC-AG exam, and NNP graduates certify through the National Certification Corporation.
State authorization
UIndy participates in NC-SARA, but its NP programs admit only residents of Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, and Ohio. The same School of Nursing accepts students from many more states into its non-clinical graduate programs, so the restriction is specific to NP preparation. Check UIndy’s nursing state authorization page before applying, especially if you may relocate during the program.
