South University Nurse Practitioner Programs

South University offers two nurse practitioner population focuses: family (FNP) and adult-gerontology primary care (AGPCNP). Both are available as an MSN and as an RN-to-MSN for associate-degree nurses. The FNP MSN is offered at the Savannah campus and online; AGPCNP is online only.

South is a private university that bills by the quarter credit. Three policies shape the decision more than any single specialty detail:

  • An ADN route to the NP. The RN-to-MSN admits associate-degree and diploma nurses and leads to FNP or AGPCNP.
  • No campus visits published. Coursework is online, and practicums take place in the student’s local area.
  • No certificates. South offers no post-graduate NP certificate, so certified NPs cannot add a specialty here.

Figures come from South University’s catalog and cost sheets. A quarter credit is about two-thirds of a semester credit, so 62 quarter credits equal roughly 41 semester credits. South’s cost sheet lists 56 credits for the AGPCNP MSN, while its catalog lists 58.

What stands out about South University’s NP programs

  • An ADN route in two specialties. Associate-degree nurses can reach FNP or AGPCNP without a separate BSN.
  • All-in cost sheets. South publishes program totals that include fees and digital textbooks.
  • No residency premium. Online and campus students pay the same per-credit rate from any state where South enrolls.
  • A pre-clinical gate. FNP students must pass a pre-clinical exam before practicums; failing it adds a 4-credit course costing $2,640.

Which South University NP program fits your goal?

  • FNP: Primary care across the lifespan, online or with a Savannah campus connection
  • AGPCNP: Primary care for adults and older adults, fully online

Family Nurse Practitioner

Quarter credits 62 (graduate) · Clinical hours 750 · MSN · RN-to-MSN

The FNP MSN runs 62 quarter credits and 750 clinical hours across four practicums and a capstone, over about 80 weeks. Applicants need a BSN with a 2.5 GPA and an unencumbered RN license, including in the state where clinicals take place.

The RN-to-MSN FNP adds 48 undergraduate credits for ADN or diploma nurses and takes about 120 weeks. Students need a 2.5 GPA to enter and a 3.0 to move into graduate courses.

Adult-Gerontology Primary Care

Quarter credits 56–58 (graduate) · MSN · RN-to-MSN · Online only

The AGPCNP MSN runs about 70 weeks online, with three practicums and a capstone. South does not publish an AGPCNP clinical-hour total. The RN-to-MSN version takes about 110 weeks and uses the same 3.0 GPA gate before graduate courses.

Doctor of Nursing Practice

South’s DNP is post-master’s only and does not prepare students for an NP specialty. It runs 67 quarter credits (51 for nurses with an NP master’s) and about 1,000 post-baccalaureate clinical hours over about 90 weeks, in Savannah, Tampa, or online. Applicants need an MSN with a 3.0 GPA.

Clinical placement

Practicums take place in person with an approved preceptor in the student’s local area.

  • RN-to-MSN FNP: South’s online page says the university arranges in-person practicum experiences in a local clinical setting.
  • MSN tracks: the MSN pages do not say who finds preceptors.
  • Licensure: students need an RN license in the state where they complete clinicals.
